Thomas Paine - Founder and Writer of Common Sense and American Crisis
In this episode on Traveling Through History, we do a deep dive into the life and impact of one of our lesser-known Founders - Thomas Paine, one of the greatest writers in our country's history.  Paine wrote 2 of the most influential pamphlets leading to the American Revolution and drive for independence, while espousing novel ideas on citizen's rights and a new form of democratic government.
Paine was born in Thetford, Norfolk, and immigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 with the help of Benjamin Franklin, arriving just in time to participate in the American Revolution.  Virtually every American Patriot read his 47-page pamphlet Common Sense, which catalyzed the call for independence from Great Britain.  The American Crisis was a pro-independence pamphlet series.  Paine lived in France for most of the 1790s, becoming deeply involved in the French Revolution.  While in England, he wrote Rights of Man (1791), in part a defense of the French Revolution against its critics, particularly the Anglo-Irish conservative writer Edmund Burke. His authorship of the tract led to a trial and conviction in absentia in England in 1792 for the crime of seditious libel.
The British government of William Pitt the Younger was worried by the possibility that the French Revolution might spread to Britain and had begun suppressing works that espoused radical philosophies.  Paine's work advocated the right of the people to overthrow their government and was therefore targeted with a writ for his arrest issued in early 1792.  Paine fled to France in September, despite not being able to speak French, but he was quickly elected to the French National Convention.  In December 1793, Vadier arrested Paine and took him to Luxembourg Prison in Paris.  He completed the first part of The Age of Reason just before he was arrested.  Mark Philp notes that "In prison Paine managed to produce (and to convey to Daniel Isaac Eaton, the radical London publisher) a dedication for The Age of Reason and a new edition of the Rights of Man with a new preface."  James Monroe used his diplomatic connections to get Paine released in November 1794.

"November Madness" in College Football and NFL - Weekend Update - Nov 25th 2024
Sports Guyz review another exciting weekend in College and NFL Football, with so many games with big playoff implications.  The upsets continue to keep coming, with the biggest this week being the loss by Alabama to Oklahoma, a game where it wasn't even close and it makes us question whether Alabama is as good as we thought or even a playoff contender.  We also go over the other big upsets from the weekend, knocking 5 total teams from college football playoff contention, making it officially "November Madness" similar to what we see in March Madness in college basketball.  The College Football Playoff is now totally scrambled from just a couple weeks ago!
The Sports Guyz take a look at the latest AP Top 25, and what the current 12-team College Playoff bracket would look like if the season ended today!  We take a look at several of the NFL upsets which keep coming as well, and we take a look at the NFL Power Rankings at the end of November.  We go over some of the funniest NFL Memes of the week and our mailbag segment.
Please a comment on who is your team and the biggest surprise team in college or NFL football this year!

History of the First Thanksgiving - the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact
On Traveling Through History, we dive into the history of the first Thanksgiving Day in America in 1620, when the Pilgrims came to the New World in their ship the "Mayflower" and settled a new community at Plymouth, Massachusetts.  These settlers were fleeing religious persecution in their own country, and wanted to find a place they could settle and freely exercise their right to practice their version of Christianity which was a Puritan and strict version of the faith.  They established the "Mayflower Compact" as a new form of democratic government, the first to be tried in the Americas at the time.
In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—50 men, 19 women and 33 young adults and children.  Just 41 were true Pilgrims, religious separatists seeking freedom from the Church of England.  Seeking the right to worship as they wished, the Pilgrims had signed a contract with the Virginia Company to settle on land near the Hudson River, which was then part of northern Virginia.  The Virginia Company was a trading company chartered by King James I with the goal of colonizing parts of the eastern coast of the New World. London stockholders financed the Pilgrim’s voyage with the understanding they’d be repaid in profits from the new settlement.
Storms threw them off their course and instead of reaching the Virginia Colony, they landed in Provincetown Harbor in November, 1620 after a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days.  They set out to create a temporary set of laws for ruling themselves as per majority agreement.  While on board the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor, the Pilgrims drew up the Mayflower Compact and all the men aboard the ship— 41 adult male colonists, including two indentured servants—signed the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620 (although it wasn’t called that at the time).  This document created the way for the Pilgrims to govern themselves.  The Mayflower Compact was important because it was the first document to establish self-government in the New World.  It remained active until 1691 when Plymouth Colony became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony.  After exploring the area, the Pilgrims decided to settle in Plymouth.
In the spring, with help from the Indians, the Pilgrims planted corn (maize), peas, and barley.  They also hunted fowl and deer, searched for wild berries and fruits, and fished. In late fall after the corn harvest, the Pilgrims gave thanks by celebrating the first Thanksgiving feast with the Indians as partners and friends.  In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days.
We review a short video about the Pilgrims and their journey over to the new World on the Mayflower and their first attempts at settlement as well as the First Thanksgiving celebration.

Henry Reviews with Payton Velligan LED ZEPPELIN 1 - Part 2
Henry Peralta of the band Blue Monday and Wild Card reviews one of the most epic heavy metal rock bands of all time "Led Zeppelin 1" by hall-of-fame and ground-breaking rockers Led Zeppelin.  This is a band that broke all molds in the 60's and 70's and formed a new genre - heavy metal!
Henry and Tom welcome Payton Velligan as their special guest, an incredible artist, singer, song-writer, guitarist/bassist, who picked this all-time great album to discuss with us on the podcast.  In this Part 2 of the podcast, we review Led Zeppelin 1 album and our favorite songs off the album.  We drill down into detail what makes each song special and what makes this amazing band so influential to so many.
Payton introduces Henry's Rock Review to this first album by Led Zeppelin, and continued to add color about each song on the album, and to her background, history in music, bands she has played with (Irrashional, Decarlo) and influences in her artistic style including bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush and the Beatles among many others.
Led Zeppelin (sometimes referred to as Led Zeppelin I) is the first album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin.  It was released on January 13th 1969 in the United States and on March 31st 1969 in the United Kingdom by Atlantic Records.  The album was recorded in September and October 1968 at Olympic Studios in London, shortly after the band's formation. It contains a mix of original material worked out in the first rehearsals, and remakes and rearrangements of contemporary blues and folk songs.  The sessions took place before the group had secured a recording contract and totalled 36 hours; they were paid for directly by Jimmy Page, the group's founder, leader and guitarist, and Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant, costing £1,782 (equivalent to £37,047 in 2023) to complete.  They were produced by Page, who as a musician was joined by band members Robert Plant (lead vocals, harmonica), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards), and John Bonham (drums). Percussionist Viram Jasani appears as a guest on one track.  The tracks were mixed by Page's childhood friend Glyn Johns, and the iconic album cover showing the Hindenburg disaster was designed by George Hardie.
