Abraham Lincoln - War-time President, Superior Leader and Preserver of the Union
Abraham Lincoln was the 16thPresident of the United States, serving from 1861 to 1865, and is regarded as one of America’s greatest leaders due to his roles in guiding the Union through the Civil War as a War-time President and working to emancipate enslaved people.  His eloquent support of democracy and insistence that the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves across the Confederacy.
Lincoln’s rise from humble beginnings to achieving the highest office in the land is a remarkable story, and his death is equally notable.  He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865, at age 56, as the country was slowly beginning to reunify following the war.  Lincoln’s distinctively humane personality and incredible impact on the nation have endowed him with an enduring legacy as one of our great Presidents and political leaders.

Battles of Trenton and Princeton - Ten Days that Turned the American Revolution

Battles of Trenton and Princeton - Ten Days that Turned the American Revolution
General George Washington’s army crossed the icy Delaware on Christmas Day 1776 and, over the course of the next 10 days, won two crucial battles of the American Revolution.  In the Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776), Washington defeated a formidable garrison of Hessian mercenaries before withdrawing.  This was the Continental Army's first victory after a string of 17 straight defeats at the hands of the British Army.
A week later he returned to Trenton to lure British forces south, then executed a daring 12-mile night march to capture Princeton on January 3, 1777.  The victories reasserted American control of much of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.
These two victories and a skirmish in between, were the confidence the Colonials needed to be able to continue their march to Independence against the formidable British troops and their King George III.

We discuss NFL Roster Construction with Jeff Reed, 2-time Super Bowl Champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Standout kicker for the UNC Tar Heels in college.  The Sports Guyz talk to Jeff about how to build a Championship caliber team with building blocks, starting with offensive line, defensive line and corners, linebackers and safeties, wide receivers and tight ends, and then get your quarterback and your kicker at the end when a team is truly ready to make a run.
A lot of teams don't build their teams the right way, and get their quarterback too early, and without the solid roster pieces around the QB, they waste the early part of his career.  Some teams build their rosters really well - Chiefs, 49ers, Texans (past couple years), Steelers, and they are the model franchises to duplicate this success.

We spend some time with Jeff Reed, 2-time Super Bowl Champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Standout kicker for the UNC Tar Heels in college.  The Sports Guyz talk to Jeff about his life, career in football, some of his pursuits since his playing days ended, and his business interests and coaching activities.  We talk about what Jeff Misses most from his football playing days, how often he wears his Super Bowl rings, his passion for the game of soccer and what he is doing in 2024.

On this 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion, we honor our WW2 veterans who served and those who gave their lives as the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
 
D-Day Invasion - the Day that Turned World War 2
The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations on June 6, 1944 (termed D-Day) of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord.Before the landings could take place, the Allies began conducting a military deception codenamed Operation Bodyguard.  The intent of Operation Bodyguard was to deceive the Germans on the date and the location of where the Allies would land. This was achieved through many tactics including fake equipment, fake tanks and planes and ships, a phantom army commanded by George Patton, double agents and fraudulent radio transmissions.In January 1944, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower was appointed commander of Operation Overlord.  Eisenhower chose June 5, 1944, as the original D-day for Operation Neptune, the largest seaborne invasion in history.  The requirements for D-Day to be effective were very specific to include the phase of the moon, the tides, and the time of day, making only a few days in each month ideal for the operation. However, bad weather caused the operation to be delayed 24 hours.Early morning on June 6, more than 24,000 British, American and Canadian airborne troops were on the ground behind enemy lines, securing bridges and exit roads.  At 6:30 a.m., the amphibious landings by Allied forces began taking place on the coast of France.The British and Canadians captured beaches codenamed Gold, Juno and Sword, while the Americans captured Utah Beach and Omaha Beach.  However, more than 2,000 U.S. forces were killed while facing heavy resistance at Omaha Beach.The Normandy invasion was a significant psychological blow to the Nazis that prevented Hitler from sending troops from France to build up his Easter Front against the advancing Soviets.  It is considered the turning point in the war that led up to the eventual surrender of Nazi Germany May 8, 1945.
