Codebreakers of World War 2 - Behind the Scenes Heroes - 25 Interesting Facts
The Code Girls or World War II Code Girls is a nickname for the more than 10,000 women who served as cryptographers (code makers) and cryptanalysts (code breakers) for the United States Military during World War II, working in secrecy to break German and Japanese codes. These women were a crucial part of the war and broke numerous codes that were of significant importance to the Allied Forces and helped them to win and shorten the Second World War.
During the recruitment process, the women were asked if they liked crossword puzzles and if they were engaged or wanted to be married. Those who answered 'yes' and 'no', respectively, were moved forward in the hiring process. The military were looking for women that were willing to relocate and had little to no ties to their current lifestyle. Candidates were invited to secret meetings where they were offered the opportunity to take a code-breaking training course and were sworn to secrecy- exposing their work was considered treason and could have been punishable by death. Those who passed the course were invited to Washington, D.C. after college graduation to join the Navy as civilian employees. The Army also began recruiting women code breakers around this time. Army officials met with representatives from women's colleges at the Mayflower Hotel in hopes of recruiting their top students before the Navy was able to do so, and in May of 1942, the female civilian code breakers, were accepted into the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, and thus into Military Service.
Due to the nature of secrecy of the female code-breakers of World War II and the "loose lips sink ships" propaganda and mentality during that time, a significant amount of their work and recruitment process remains a mystery, and without an existing record of a roster of all of the Code Girls, it is almost impossible to track down all of these individuals and get all of the details of their recruitment experience.
We also review Bletchley Park an English country house and estate in Bletchley, Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), that became the principal center of British code-breaking during the Second World War. The mansion was constructed during the years following 1883 for the financier and politician Herbert Leon in the Victorian Gothic, Tudor and Dutch Baroque styles, on the site of older buildings of the same name. During World War II, the estate housed the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), which regularly penetrated the secret communications of the Axis Powers – most importantly the German Enigma and Lorenz ciphers. The GC&CS team of codebreakers included Alan Turing, Harry Golombek, Gordon Welchman, Hugh Alexander, Bill Tutte and Stuart Milner-Barry. Bletchley also was staffed by hundreds of British "Code Girls" assisting in code and cipher breaking.
We review several short videos and interviews of the Code Girls from the excellent book "Code Girls" by Liza Mundy. We also watch a short clip of a scene from the movie "Imitation Game" when Alan Turing and his team break the German Enigma code machine! ss always we discuss the 25 Interesting Facts about the Codebreakers of World War 2!

Pearl Harbor - Infamous Day and American Entrance into World War 2
On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Oahu in the Hawaiin islands, there was a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base where the Pacific Fleet was being kept, by the Japanese that precipitated the entry of the United States into World War II. The strike climaxed a decade of worsening relations between the United States and Japan.
In July 1939, the U.S. announced the termination of the 1911 Treaty of Commerce and Navigation with Japan. Beginning in the summer of 1940, the U.S. began to restrict the export to Japan of materials useful in war. Between June 1940 and the fateful crisis of December 1941, the tension constantly mounted. In July 1941, by which time the Japanese had occupied all of Indochina and had entered into an alliance with the Axis powers (Germany and Italy), the U.S. government severed all commercial and financial relations with Japan. Japanese assets were frozen, and an embargo was declared on shipments to Japan of petroleum and other vital war materials. Militarists were steadily gaining in influence in the Tokyo government; they bitterly resented U.S. aid to China, which by this time had been stepped up. Nonetheless, negotiations looking to find some kind of understanding between the United States and Japan took place through the autumn of 1941, and not until near the end of November did it become clear that no agreement was possible.
The first Japanese dive-bomber appeared over Pearl Harbor at 7:55 am (local time). It was part of a first wave of nearly 200 aircraft, including torpedo planes, bombers, and fighters. Within a quarter of an hour the various airfields at the base were subjected to savage attack. At the same time a massive action was directed against Kimmel’s fleet. The ships anchored in the harbor made perfect targets for the Japanese bombers, and, because it was Sunday morning (a time chosen by the Japanese for maximum surprise), they were not fully manned. Most of the damage to the battleships was inflicted in the first 30 minutes of the assault. The battleship USS Arizona blew up with a tremendous explosion. Riddled with bombs and torpedoes, the USS West Virginia settled on an even keel on the bottom of the harbor. The USS Oklahoma, hit by four torpedoes within five minutes, rolled completely over, with its bottom and propeller rising above the waters of the harbor. The USS California, the flagship of the Pacific Battle Force, was torpedoed and ordered abandoned as it slowly sank in shallow water. The target ship USS Utah also was sunk. Hardly a vessel escaped damage. The anti-aircraft crews on the various vessels were fairly prompt in getting into action, and army personnel fired with what they had, but the force of the attack was in no serious way too great to stop.
We review several short videos and then as always we discuss the 25 Interesting Facts about the Attack on Pearl Harbor!

Henry Reviews Scorpions Blackout Album - Episode 1
Henry reviews the legendary "Blackout" album, the 8th studio album by the hall of fame German rock band Scorpions. Henry uses his story telling and unique perspective as a professional musician to give his take on each of the legendary tracks from this underrated platinum album from 1982! We also go over some great stories from Henry's past related to the Scorpions.
After losing his voice during the writing of the album, lead singer Klaus Meine had to undergo surgery on his vocal cords and was uncertain as to whether or not he would be able to record. Demos of the material were recorded with singer Don Dokken from Dokken, a then-unknown band from Los Angeles. However, none of those recordings are featured on the album and Dokken is only credited with backing vocals. Meine ended lead singer on all tracks with Don Dokken backing him up on several songs.
In Kerrang! issue 12, guitarist Rudolf Schenker said that he could not choose between his guitar solos on "China White" so the US and European releases differed in this detail. Henry likes the American version of the guitar solo on that track better, but encourages you to listen to both!
A self-portrait of artist Gottfried Helnwein is featured on the cover of the album. Schenker portrays this character in the epic "No One Like You" music video which was one of the highest rated MTV videos ever.
Please drop us a comment about whether you have seen the Scorpions live and what you think of the Blackout album!
