The Olympic Movement - History of the Ancient and Modern Games

The Olympic Games have a rich history that spans thousands of years.  The ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD to honor the god Zeus.  The games were a celebration of the Greek gods that lasted five days and included athletic competitions, artistic activities, and sacrifices.  Some of the sports that were part of the ancient games are still included in the modern Summer Games, such as the marathon and the triathlon, and the ancient games also included artistic activities like music, poetry, singing, and theater.  The ancient games had few rules, including no biting or eye gouging, and competitors fought until one gave up or died.  There were also no weight classes or time limits.  One famous event was the Hoplite, where runners raced while wearing full armor.  The Romans banned the games after conquering Greece in the second century BC, but they were revived in 1896 in Athens, Greece by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman who founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The first modern games featured 43 events and 280 participants from 12 countries. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympics have been held every two years, alternating between the two.
