"A Perfect Frenzy" - Historical Book Review with Author Andrew Lawler
On Traveling Through History, we welcome back best-selling author Andrew Lawler to share his new book with us, "A Perfect Frenzy", a fascinating historical book about Lord Dunmore, the royal British governor of Virginia at the start of the Revolutionary War. It's a fascinating book which takes a completely new look at Lord Dunmore, his legacy of managing New York and then Virginia, and how he governed Virginia as it slipped into rebellion and pushed for Independence. Andrew is making his second appearance on the podcast, after his first appearance some months ago to talk about his great book "Under Jerusalem."
Andrew discusses many different angles about Lord Dunmore and his life and legacy and the mistruths and propaganda that was fed to us our whole lives about this era of American history, including the burning of Norfolk which was done largely by the American patriots and not Dunmore and his troops as has been commonly reported since the war. The book is getting rave reviews because of the new ground it covers and the true history that is told after all these years, and it puts a focus on the Virginia / southern campaign in the Revolutionary War, which is lesser known than the battles that took place up north. The book's title comes from the famous Thomas Jefferson quote: "Lord Dunmore has commenced hostilities in Virginia, it has raised our countrymen into a perfect frenzy."
John Murray "Lord Dunmore", 4th Earl of Dunmore PC (1730 – 25 February 1809) was a British colonial administrator who served as the governor of Virginia from 1771 to 1775. Dunmore was named governor of New York in 1770. He succeeded to the same position in the colony of Virginia the following year after the death of Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt. As Virginia's governor, Dunmore directed a series of campaigns against the trans-Appalachian Indians, known as Lord Dunmore's War. He is noted for issuing a 1775 document, Dunmore's Proclamation, offering freedom to slaves who fought for the British Crown against Patriot rebels in Virginia. Dunmore fled to New York after the burning of Norfolk in 1776 and later returned to Britain. He was Governor of the Bahamas from 1787 to 1796.
